MAPPlutonium at Rocky Flats - LeRoy Moore, Ph.D.
A presentation entitled "Rocky Flats: A Local Hazard Forever" will focus on the long-term danger of plutonium contamination at the site of the defunct Rocky Flats nuclear weapons plant. Dr. Moore will explain why the government's plan to allow construction of a road on the refuge, and allow pubic recreation in the future should never happen. One purpose of the project is to raise awareness about dangers associated with exposure to the tiny particles of radioactive plutonium knowingly left in the soil at Rocky Flats after the cleanup of the site.
The project to implement Nuclear Guardianship at Rocky Flats is a joint endeavor of the Rocky Mountain Peace and Justice Center and Naropa University's Environmental Studies program. It combines the arts, science and remembrance to cope with the seemingly intractable human-caused quandary of radioactive contamination. Nuclear Guardianship is a powerful manifestation of a shift away from the culture of risk, secrecy and denial we have inherited to a culture of ecological responsibility and greater democracy. The project seeks to initiate a commitment for the millennia to safeguard Rocky Flats, a pledge to our children's children's . . . children.
