It is happening across the nation -- and here in Colorado -- Metropolitan State College of Denver (my alma mater):
23 percent tuition hike; University of Colorado: tuition upped nine percent.
Of course, on top of the base tuition price are further increases in fees and the cost of text books/supplies. Students also need to eat, clothe themselves, have transportation and a place to sleep. The plain truth is that except for the pernicious marketing of loans and grants, college education has priced itself out of reach of normal people.
Still the mantra from 'the establishment' is 'Go to College! Go to College! Go to College!' To wit: "Vice President Joe Biden touted new incentives to boost college graduation rates by eight million students by 2020 to meet the Obama administration’s goal to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world" (The Daily Free Press-March 23, 2011).
Nevertheless, as the first article linked to below reports, these days upon completion of college with a brand-spanking-new diploma in hand ... graduates have few job prospects and massive debt obligations that they must repay with interest almost forever!
Students and parents need to stage a revolt against the higher-education-corporate-banker-complex.
